Facts On Household Hazardous Waste

  • The average lifetime of a CFL is 8 to 10 years. That’s 7 to 9 more years than an incandescent bulb.
  • Just two gallons of used oil can generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours.
  • Between 25 and 50% of this anti-freeze ends up improperly in the environment, and dumping by consumers is a major cause of coolant pollution in the U.S.

Household Hazardous Waste
Commonly referred to as household hazardous waste, or HHW, many of the everyday products in your home or garage can be hazardous to you and the environment if used, stored, or disposed of improperly. These items can contain harmful materials like lead or mercury. You can also find harmful substances in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit.

Used antifreeze contains more than just ethylene/propylene glycols and water, which is what antifreeze is composed of along with chemicals to inhibit rust and corrosion.  These chemicals along with lead and benzene can cause serious health and environmental problems. Large quantities of glycol can suffocate aquatic life and disrupt sewage treatment processes.

Household Hazardous Waste in general can be harmful to living things, the environment and to the people handling them if they are not disposed of properly. This means HHW should never be dumped on the ground, into water resources, down a sink or toilet drain, or thrown into the trash.

There are special collection days and events for HHW. Please check our calendar or search www.earth911.org for collection events or drop of sites near you. For rechargeable battery recycling
